Computerworld TOP 200 Report, i.e. year 2017 in the IT industry. e-point records growth

Every year IDG experts have analyzed the Polish IT market. 2017 was a difficult year for the IT industry: it grew at a rate 3 times slower than the entire economy and the slowdown has affected primarily the market giants.

Industries that thus far made large investments in IT, i.e. banking, public administration, finance and insurance, and power industries, also reduced their capital expenditures. Nevertheless, certain IT companies have recorded growth.

How was the year 2017 for the IT industry?

In 2017, revenue generated by the IT industry grew by 1.7% compared to the previous year, however, considering a 2% inflation, it is only an illusory increase, noted Tomasz Bitner[1] [2]  in the introductory comment tellingly titled “Retreat was stopped. Alarm keeps sounding”. The Polish IT industry keeps growing at a rate three times slower than the entire economy. It is the smaller companies that record growth, while the giants record a decline in revenue.

The most IT solutions are invariably purchased by:

  • banking
  • public administration
  • industry (including construction)
  • finance and insurance.

In the previous year, only trade recorded a growth in expenditures on IT.

Future: the cloud

IT has been changing the face of business for over quarter-century. However, when indicating the directions for future development of this industry, experts point primarily to the cloud.

While the value of the entire IT sector in Poland has grown by 1.7% over the last year, the value of the IT services market grew by 8.3% from nearly PLN 13 bn to PLN 14 bn. The public cloud market in Poland was valued at PLN 860.8 bn, i.e. 17.7% more than in 2016 (PLN 731.6 bn).

It is estimated that as cloud solutions grow in popularity, on-premise solutions will become more and more expensive. At the same time, an increasing number of tools are being developed natively in the cloud (AI, IoT, cognitive systems).

The cloud offensive keeps changing the entire IT services market. There is a clear trend to move away from large monolithic projects and towards modular solutions integrated by external cloud components.

In Polish companies, the cloud isn’t yet being deployed on a wide scale. This stems from the concerns regarding data security and difficulties related to its integration with existing systems. Nevertheless, this will keep changing and the Polish market shows great potential in this area.
