About the client

BNP Paribas Bank Polska S.A. is a Polish universal bank with over 45 years of tradition. After Q3 2020, it had nearly 4 million customers and handled more than 117 billion in assets.

The mission of BNP Paribas Bank Polska S.A. is to offer innovative financial solutions in a responsible manner and to support the local economy. The bank pursues the UN Sustainable Development Goals by engaging in projects that have a positive social, economic and environmental impact. It reduces its impact on the environment and encourages customers to transition to a low-carbon economy, as evidenced by its victory in the ESG category in the seventh edition of the “Stars of Banking” ranking, organized by Dziennik Gazeta Prawna and PwC.

Project goal

BNP Paribas Bank Polska S.A.’s goal was to revamp its website to combine environmental responsibility with concern for customer convenience.

At the time the work began, BNP Paribas Bank Polska S.A.’s homepage was in an unfavorable environment, along with other entities that emit CO2 in significant quantities, according to websitecarbon.com. The main mission of the project was thus to noticeably reduce emissions.

Challenges

The effort focused on optimizing the bank’s homepage, www.bnpparibas.pl, for CO2 emissions over a 3-month period. The solutions adopted were implemented while not interfering with the layout and functionality that users are used to. The main goal of the project also took into account the rational use of resources.

Short time horizon

No interference with functionalities

Rational use of resources

"The implemented project corresponded with the idea of responsible business, which entails working to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations (UN), especially actions to improve the climate".

Project implementation

Given the existing challenges, the project was implemented through multi-stage optimizations so that the technological change would not affect any of the functions that customers are used to.

The portal’s CO2 reduction consisted of intensified work in the area of:

Creation – optimizing the graphics
Development – optimizing the process of loading scripts
Technology – loading content in the background and numerous micro-installations between them

Due to limited resources and the expected quick and measurable results, the work deliberately focused on optimizing the bank’s homepage, which gathers the largest amount of user traffic.

The bank also conducts continuous communication activities through the BNP Paribas Bank Polska S.A. portal and social media. Their goal is to raise awareness and share good practices for the environment.

Project outcomes

Main outcome: reduction of more than 85% (from 4.59g CO2 to 0.56g CO2)

The scale of the positive impact of optimizing the site can be compared to a release equivalent to the amount of CO2 as many as 88,740 trees absorb in a year.

This result can be contrasted with the planting of a 100-year-old forest of 2.59 Royal Baths Parks in 12 months.

BNP Paribas Bank Polska S.A.’s homepage is 67% “cleaner” than other sites surveyed by websitecarbon.com. The process is continuously implemented, which in practice means continuous improvement of these achievements on the bank’s side.
