Developing an E-Commerce System Based on SAP Commerce Cloud

Implementation and development model of platform based on the 'hub-and-spoke' concept

26 Sep 2023

The dynamic growth of e-commerce prompted one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electronics to apply a sales strategy using the SAP Commerce Cloud platform. The ideal solution to support the project turned out to be a team leasing model with e-point SA. It allowed the company's offer to be continuously developed on the international market.

About SAP Commerce Cloud

The implementation and development model of the SAP Commerce platform is based on the 'hub-and-spoke' concept. In this arrangement, the hub serves as a central node for all other systems participating in the network. It plays a key role in managing the flow of information and data between the various interconnected systems.

Project Implementation

In practice, this approach requires building a project concept in the hub, with a pilot in a selected country. After successful implementation, the pilot would be expanded to a regional offering on a source code basis within the SAP Commerce Cloud platform.

Due to the client's organizational complexity and their needs, we built an expert team to support the development of the e-commerce system. This dedicated task force comprised two SAP Commerce teams and fell under the direct management of the client. In total, six teams worked on the entire project.

The project was initially divided into clusters, i.e. systemically and geographically related areas of the business. From the very beginning, a dedicated e-point team (alongside other teams) participated in projects implemented within their designated cluster. They carried out their tasks in cooperation with managers and developers from Europe, South Korea, Australia, and Vietnam.

With each successive iteration, the cooperation covered an increasingly broader range of activities. Eventually it extended to Central and Eastern Europe and then right up to the international level. The entire time, cooperation was conducted among several teams from various companies. It was all managed by a project manager from the client's company.

"It was extremely exciting for us to collaborate on this project. Working with a team focused on the European market, we had the opportunity to realize our contribution to the global e-commerce ecosystem".

CEO

e-point SA

The team consisted of around 20 people:

 Project manager
 Scrum master
 IT architect
 UX designer
 Front-end developer
 Backend developer
 Business analysts

To facilitate and organize the flow of information, a project manager was appointed to communicate with the team on both the e-point and client sides. This made it easier to keep in contact with the employees responsible for the product as well as the business and marketing sides of the company. The whole project was carried out using Agile and Scrum methodologies to ensure the smooth execution of tasks.

At every stage of system development, we carefully considered the unique market requirements of each country. We also adapted the platform to comply with country-specific regulatory rules and cater to the preferences of local users.

Impact

Thanks to the smooth cooperation between the e-point team and the developers on the client’s side, the team completed the following projects:

Introduction of euro currency to the Croatian sales platform.

A refund program for exchanging old mobile devices (purchased from the manufacturer) for new replacements.

Improvements to the e-commerce platform’s user interface elements (like navigation and page layout) and the overall customer experience.

Integration of the e-commerce system with national and international payment providers.

Integration, synchronization, and data management between the e-commerce system and the ERP system.
